Mood Board

Welcome back to A Thursday Turtle Blog!

Recently, my class was assigned the task of developing mood boards for our film openings. Chloe, Nevaeh, and I made this one:

I was in charge of the color, wardrobe, and shots. With this being a slasher film, I thought it would be a good idea to include a lot of dark, unsettling colors, plus a lot of red. Chloe suggested that the main character, being a teenage girly-girl, be obsessed with pink. Nevaeh and I agreed that it could work, so I added in some bright pink to the color section of the mood board. I could've found darker shades, but I think having such contrasting colors will create a good effect. It is also intended to be unsettling, so the change from dark colors and uncomfortable combinations to bright pink when the character is shown will really help show that something is wrong in the character’s mind.

For the wardrobe, I tried to find realistic-looking clothing for teenagers at a party. In my head, I was for some reason picturing a party from a couple of decades back, and my costume choices reflected that. After some discussion with the group, I made some changes and updated the mood board to be a little more current. The dress code of the party is going to be somewhat casual, which I represented with the picture on the bottom. The girls would likely want to dress up a bit more, which is why the other outfits are a little more done-up. I tried to find clothes that teens really would wear to a friend’s party.

Whenever I imagine our film opening, the camera is always very near to the floor. This is done to highlight the people laying dead on the ground. For this reason, I added a picture from The Shining in which a lower camera level was used, and I also added a way in which it may be filmed.

I think the mood board came out pretty well. This assignment was paired with another, which I will write about in the next post!

To be continued…
